Exiles
There is a corner of a foreign field that
is forever England Scotland
This page is dedicated to Lowland Locomotives which were or are now exiled away from their former stomping grounds.
The sole surviving Clayton class 17 D8568 has had a nomadic life since withdrawal from the Scottish region in 1971. Initially owned by Ribble (later Castle) Cement and used at their plant at ???????, the locomotive was saved for preservation and moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where it is seen here in 1982. Part of the condition of sale was that it remained in this livery for a number of years. It is now preserved in its original green livery at the Swanage Railway. It would be so nice to see it running at Bo'ness or Brechin even for a short time. I have no idea why Diesel Hydraulic 0-4-0T D2774 should not be preserved somewhere in Scotland, it was built in Glasgow and is one of the very few (only?) surviving examples of the North British Locomotive Company's disastrous foray into diesel locomotive production. It is preserved at the East Lancashire Railway at Bury
When the lines from Manchester Piccadilly to Hadfield and Glossop were converted to 25 kV, twelve class 303 units, nos. 036,041,048,049,050,057,060,066,067,078 and 082 were sent to Longsight depot as a temporary measure until new stock became available, being surplus to requirements in Strathclyde, . One of the units is seen here on-shed at Longsight with two class 304's. Note that the 303 still has it's two digit headcode still operating and is displaying "65" which was Springburn / Milngavie (stopping via Singer). These units later received the Greater Manchester PTE livery of dark brown and orange, which was very similar to the Strathclyde livery
For the excellent North-West diesel day, run as part of the Longsight 150 celebrations on 25th April 1992, a pair of class 26's were sent south to work some of the trains. Sadly they failed on their first duty of the day and spent the remainder of the day dumped in one of the parcels bays at Preston Station
A third class 26 no 26041 was at the Longsight 150 celebrations as a static exhibit, seen here inside the shed beside minature railway demonstration
Crewe Works Open Day 12/34/56, and sneaking into the background is 27212, sent down to Crewe for trials One of the class 37's which was part of the Motherwell pool renumbered as 37/3's and named was 37190 "Dalzell". This
locomotive is now preserved at the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley
O.K. I admit that 24081 was never one of the class 24's allocated to Scotland, but I have included this shot of the locomotive in the shed at Southport as a tribute to the many class 24's which worked the Inverness line for
many years
At the time this photograph was taken, the class 117's were not allocated to any Scottish depot, but since this is my Website and I don't have a photograph of any of them at work in Scoland then I will include it, so there!
These three units made up of 51395, 59505, 51353, 52369, 59521, 51411, 51371, 59509 and 51413 were working their way north to Edinburgh following refurbishment. Photographed at Preston on the 12th July 1993
