Glasgow North Headcodes

The north bank services had their own distinctive two digit headcodes.  The full list shown below is reproduced from the 1968 Working Time Table and remained in use from the introduction of electric services until the mid 1970s when headcodes on all locomotives and multiple units ceased to be displayed, which is probably just as well as the increased variety of destinations following the opening of the Argyle line would have exceeded the number of permutations available.  The "00" display was adopted until white marker lights replaced the blinds around 1980 and the headcode window was plated over when the units were refurbished.  The initial publicity shots showed a unit with the headcode "A1" but this code was never used for normal services.

South Bank Headcodes

The south bank service headcodes radically differed from the north side system in that the two digit code displayed by the EMUs was the last two digits of what should have been a four digit headcode shared by both electric and diesel multiple unit services.  For example a unit displaying "50" as a Glasgow to Gourock service would appear on the Working Timetable as "2L50".  DMUs such as the class 107s and 126s were capable of displaying the full headcode.  The full list of codes for electric services is shown below.  The first character would be the classification of train i.e.1,2 or 3 denoting Express, Stopping or Empty

Current Practise

The current practise is to use a first digit train classification as before, followed by a 2nd digit route code with the third and fourth digits being individual train reporting numbers.  ECS workings use the 2nd digit and train reporting number of the passenger service that the stock will form.  The letters shown in this table should not be considered as "cast in stone", as service alterations would necessitate changes to headcodes, for example in 1981 the now discontinued service between Airdrie and Milngavie used the letter "A" and at that time services between Airdrie and Balloch were "B".
